EASY LEMON VOLCANO SCIENCE FOR PRESCHOOLERS

LEMON VOLCANO INGREDIENTS:

2 Lemons per volcano

Baking Soda

Food Coloring

Knife

Butter Knife

Paper Plate

Step by Step:

  1. Place your lemon on a paper plate and have an Adult cut off both ends of the lemon.  The rest can be done by the preschooler!
  2. Have the preschooler take the butter knife into one end of the lemon and loosen the lemon.
  3. Next, let your preschooler choose what color/s she wants to use and drop 4-6 drops of food coloring on the top of the lemon.
  4. Let the preschooler sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda on top of the lemon and your volcano will begin erupting!
  5. Lastly, squeeze the cut ends (bottom/top that the adult cut off) of the lemon on top of the baking soda and now your reaction will really take place and begin to bubble and erupt even more!
  6. If you agitate the juice it will create a bit more frothy fun too!

TIP:  Add in some dish soap to help the frothy bubbles stay around a bit longer!  Tip from Babble Dabble Do!

HOW DOES THE LEMON VOLCANO WORK?

The Science Behind Lemon Volcanoes. Lemon juice contains citric acid which when mixed with baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) reacts to form carbon dioxide and sodium citrate, which causes the liquid to fizz and bubble.

A science experiment with lemons is always fun and through the baking soda and lemon juice you’ve created a volcano.

HOW TO MAKE EDIBLE STARBURST SLIME

Ingredients

1 Bag of Starburst Candies

Powdered Sugar

Cornstarch (I believe it’s called corn flour in the UK)

Instructions:

Gather materials. You will want a couple of small glass bowls and a pot of water to cook on the stove (or a microwave). Divide the Starburst candies by color and unwrap. Place each color into a small glass bowl.

Mix ¼ c. powdered sugar with ¼ c. cornstarch.

Boil a pot of water and place the glass bowl into the pot to melt the Starburst candies. (Making it like a double boiler). Stir regularly to prevent burning. Once melted, remove from heat. You can also do it in the microwave for 2 – 30 second increments, stirring in between.

Turn onto a surface dusted with the cornstarch and powdered sugar mixture. Wait about five minutes until cooled. It can burn you at this point, so REALLY be careful!

Knead the melted candy with the powdered sugar mixture. Be sure to pull it and stretch it as you knead to let a lot of air into it. This will help it to be less sticky and more stretchy.

Now it is time to play! Make sure to wash their hands first if they want to eat their Starburst slime.  My kids wanted to immediately mix all of the colors and see how it looked.

IF IT LASTS, you can store it in a sealed container for a few days. 🙂

How does it work?  There is some science behind it. When the candy is melted and then kneaded, air bubbles are incorporated into the candy ( like taffy), making it lighter and stretchier.
