EDIBLE SLIME FROM STARBURST CANDY

This is an edible Starburst Slime!  Yup- it is made from candy. Yum, right?!?!  Who wouldn’t want to make some rainbow, stretchy, gooey and completely edible slime from Starburst candies?

HOW TO MAKE EDIBLE STARBURST SLIME:

Ingredients

1 Bag of Starburst Candies

Powdered Sugar

Cornstarch (I believe it’s called corn flour in the UK)

Instructions:

Gather materials. You will want a couple of small glass bowls and a pot of water to cook on the stove (or a microwave). Divide the Starburst candies by color and unwrap. Place each color into a small glass bowl.

Mix ¼ c. powdered sugar with ¼ c. cornstarch.

Boil a pot of water and place the glass bowl into the pot to melt the Starburst candies. (Making it like a double boiler). Stir regularly to prevent burning. Once melted, remove from heat. You can also do it in the microwave for 2 – 30 second increments, stirring in between.

Turn onto a surface dusted with the cornstarch and powdered sugar mixture. Wait about five minutes until cooled. It can burn you at this point, so REALLY be careful!

Knead the melted candy with the powdered sugar mixture. Be sure to pull it and stretch it as you knead to let a lot of air into it. This will help it to be less sticky and more stretchy.

Now it is time to play! Make sure to wash their hands first if they want to eat their Starburst slime.  My kids wanted to immediately mix all of the colors and see how it looked.

IF IT LASTS, you can store it in a sealed container for a few days. 🙂

How does it work?  There is some science behind it. When the candy is melted and then kneaded, air bubbles are incorporated into the candy ( like taffy), making it lighter and stretchier.

Parmesan Crusted Chicken

This Parmesan Crusted Chicken is an easy meal idea. We use pounded thin chicken breasts, coat in a delicious Parmesan coating, and then fried to make them crispy. Add this chicken idea to your dinner this week.

Ingredients:

  • 2 lb Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 tbsp Water
  • 1 tsp minced Garlic
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Black Pepper
  • 2 cup Shredded Parmesan Cheese
  • 4 tbsp Butter
  • 2 tbsp Olive Oil

Instructions:

  • Cut each breast in half and pound to about 1/2" thick.
  • Beat egg and water in a shallow bowl until blended.
  • Add garlic, salt and pepper and whisk to blend.
  • Place parmesan in another shallow bowl.
  • Dip each piece of chicken in egg mixture making sure to coat.
  • Allow excess egg to drip off.

Place in parmesan. Sprinkle more parmesan over top. Gently press, then turn and repeat on other side. Shake off excess. Repeat with remaining chicken.

Place butter and oil in a large skillet over high heat.

Place chicken and do not move until edges brown (so that cheese sticks to chicken, about 3 minutes).

Lightly press with spatula then turn over and again do not move until browned.

Lightly press with spatula and remove to serving plate.

KOOL-AID DYED PLAYSILK

Materials:

  • Kool-Aid
  • Silk Scarves (I purchased 6 30″ square scarves from Darma Trading Co.)
  • Vinegar

Instructions:

  1. Based on the colors you want, assemble your Kool-Aid packs. You can reference the handy chart at the bottom of this post to determine which color combinations you want.
  2. Place silk scarves in a pot of hot water with 2 tablespoons vinegar for 30 minutes to help the fibers absorb the colors. Remove one scarf at a time to dye.

3a. Stove Method: In a separate pot, pour 2 cups of water, 1/2 cup of vinegar, and Kool-Aid packs. Dissolve thoroughly over low heat.

3b. Microwave Method: In a glass bowl, pour 2 cups of water, 1/2 cup of vinegar, and Kool-Aid packs. Dissolve thoroughly.

4a. Stove Method: Place silk scarf into pot and stir to disperse dye. Continue stirring occasionally for 10 minutes, making sure the scarf is absorbing the color evenly.

4b. Microwave Method: Place the scarf in the glass bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Microwave on high for three minutes and allow to sit for three more.

  1. Allow scarf to cool. Over a colander, begin to rinse/wring your scarf until water runs clear.
  2. Set your scarves to dry in the sun while you endlessly try to keep your kids away from them! 😀
